Terms of Service

Effective date: May 9, 2026·Last updated: May 9, 2026

Welcome to Legacy

These are the rules for using Legacy. We've tried to write them in plain language, but they're still a legal agreement. By signing up or using Legacy, you're agreeing to these terms.

If you don't agree with something, please don't use Legacy. If you have questions, email us at legacystories@proton.me.

What Legacy is

Legacy is a web service that helps you preserve your family members' life stories. You add a parent or family member to your account, share a unique link with them, and they answer guided questions on their phone. Their answers are shaped by AI into memoir-style writing that builds up over time into a record of their life.

Who can use Legacy

You must be at least 18 years old to create an account on Legacy. By signing up, you confirm that you are.

If you live in a country with a higher minimum age for digital services, that age applies instead.

Your account

You're responsible for:

  • Keeping your password (or Google sign-in) secure
  • Everything that happens on your account
  • Making sure your contact email is up-to-date

If you suspect someone has access to your account, change your password right away and email us at legacystories@proton.me.

You can have one personal account. Please don't create multiple accounts to bypass plan limits or for other unfair purposes.

Adding family members

When you add a parent, grandparent, or other family member to Legacy:

  • You confirm you have their permission to do so, or that you're acting reasonably on their behalf as a close family member
  • You confirm any photos, stories, or details you share belong to you or your family — not stolen, not copyrighted by others, not someone else's private information
  • You take responsibility for what you share

If a family member tells us they don't want their information on Legacy, we'll remove it — even if you're the account holder. We'll let you know when that happens.

What you can't do

Some things aren't allowed on Legacy. Don't:

  • Use Legacy for anything illegal under Portuguese, EU, or international law
  • Upload stories or content that harasses, threatens, or harms others
  • Upload sexually explicit content, hate speech, or content promoting violence
  • Upload content that violates someone else's copyright, privacy, or other rights
  • Try to break, hack, or interfere with Legacy's security or systems
  • Scrape, automate, or abuse our APIs
  • Resell access to your account
  • Pretend to be someone else
  • Use Legacy to spam or phish anyone
  • Upload malware or harmful code

If you do any of this, we may suspend or delete your account — and may report you to authorities if the situation calls for it.

Your stories belong to you

This is important: the content you upload to Legacy — the stories, photos, audio, memoir text — is yours.

By using Legacy, you give us a limited license to store, display, and process your content only as needed to provide the service to you. We can't use your stories for marketing, sell them to anyone, or do anything beyond running the service.

Your AI-polished memoir text is generated specifically for you and yours alone. We don't use your content to train AI models. We don't share it with anyone outside the sub-processors listed in our Privacy Policy.

If you delete your content, we delete it. If you delete your account, all your content is deleted.

Data backup is your responsibility

We do our best to keep your data safe and our service running. But please:

  • Export your stories regularly using the data export feature (coming soon — for now, email us if you need a copy)
  • Don't rely on Legacy as your only backup of irreplaceable family memories
  • Save important photos in your own storage as well

We're not legally responsible for data loss caused by service outages, technical failures, or events outside our control.

Service availability

We try hard to keep Legacy online, but we can't promise 100% uptime. Sometimes things break, sometimes we need to do maintenance, sometimes the internet has a bad day.

We may also change features, add new ones, or sometimes remove things that aren't working well. If we make a major change that affects you negatively, we'll try to give notice.

Free plan and future paid plans

Legacy currently offers a free plan with up to 2 family members per account and unlimited questions and answers.

In the future, we plan to offer paid plans that may include things like:

  • More family members per account
  • A beautifully formatted memoir PDF you can download
  • Additional features as they're built

When paid plans launch, here's how it'll work:

  • Subscriptions can be cancelled anytime. You'll keep access until the end of your billing period, then automatically move to the free plan.
  • No refunds for partial months of monthly subscriptions.
  • Annual subscriptions include a 14-day refund window for EU consumers as required by EU consumer law. After that, no refunds.
  • Free trials (if offered): you can cancel anytime during the trial without charge.
  • Payments are processed by Stripe. We don't store your full credit card number.

We'll update these terms with full pricing details when paid plans launch.

Account suspension and termination

We may suspend or close your account if:

  • You violate these Terms
  • You misuse the service in ways that harm us or other users
  • We're legally required to (court order, etc.)
  • Your account has been inactive for 24 months (with prior warning — see our Privacy Policy)

If we close your account for misconduct, we'll let you know why and give you a chance to download your data first when reasonably possible.

You can close your own account anytime through the Account page. That removes everything immediately.

Disclaimer of warranty

Legacy is provided "as is" and "as available." We do our best, but we can't guarantee:

  • That Legacy will be available without interruption
  • That AI-generated memoir text will be perfect (it's AI — it can make mistakes)
  • That your data will be safe from every possible threat (we use industry-standard security but nothing is unhackable)
  • That Legacy will fit a specific purpose you have in mind

To the maximum extent allowed by law, we disclaim all implied warranties.

Limitation of liability

We've tried our best to make Legacy safe and reliable. But to the extent allowed by law:

  • We're not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages from using (or not being able to use) Legacy
  • Our total liability to you is limited to the amount you've paid us in the past 12 months (which on the free plan is zero)

This doesn't limit your rights as an EU consumer under Portuguese or EU law — those rights still apply where they protect you more strongly than these terms.

Indemnity

If your use of Legacy causes legal problems for us — for example, you upload content that violates someone else's rights and they sue us — you agree to defend us and cover the costs (legal fees, judgments, etc.) of that situation.

This applies to your actions, not Legacy's.

Changes to these terms

If we update these Terms, we'll:

  • Post the new version on this page with a new effective date
  • Email you if the changes are significant
  • Give you a chance to review and decide whether to continue using Legacy

If you keep using Legacy after a significant update, you're agreeing to the new terms.

Governing law and disputes

These Terms are governed by Portuguese law and applicable EU regulations (including GDPR and the Digital Services Act).

If we have a dispute, we'll try to sort it out in good faith first by email. If we can't:

  • For consumers in the EU, you can use the EU Online Dispute Resolution platform or take the matter to the courts of your country of residence.
  • Otherwise, the courts of Portugal have jurisdiction.

Nothing in these Terms takes away the consumer rights you have under EU or Portuguese law.
